Wildlight: Emergence
Wildlight: Emergence
A Fine Art Exploration of Butterflies in Monochrome
Emergence is the first sub-project within Wildlight — a series of black-and-white fine art photographs focusing on butterflies. Often seen as symbols of transformation, grace, and freedom, these creatures are reimagined here in monochrome, where colour is stripped away to highlight detail, contrast, the intricate patterns of their wings, and a quiet strength often overlooked.
Created for a women-only exhibition, this series reflects the idea of growth, change, and self-definition — themes deeply tied to both the natural life cycle of the butterfly and the evolving voice of the artist. Through a considered use of light, shadow, and form, Emergence invites viewers to pause, observe, and connect with these fleeting moments of beauty and becoming.
It marks the beginning of a new creative direction within Wildlight: one that leans into simplicity, emotion, and the artistic possibilities of black-and-white wildlife photography.
The Importance of the Project
The Importance of the Project Wildlight: Emergence holds personal and creative significance as the first focused development within the wider Wildlight project. Created for a women-only exhibition, this body of work not only marks a deepening of Shona’s fine art photographic practice, but also reflects a conscious shift in how she observes and portrays the natural world.
Through the subject of butterflies — often symbols of transformation, strength, and beauty — Emergence explores ideas of change, identity, and growth. Working in black and white allows the images to move beyond the obvious visual appeal of colour, revealing subtler qualities: the fine textures of wings, the repetition of pattern, and the quiet elegance found in their movement and stillness. This stripped-back approach invites viewers to experience these creatures in a new and contemplative way.
The project represents an important evolution in Shona’s voice as a photographer. It combines a more expressive, artistic methodology with careful observation of her subjects, pushing her practice further into the realm of fine art while remaining rooted in the natural world.
Being created specifically for a women-only exhibition adds an additional layer of meaning to Emergence. As a woman photographing a subject so often associated with delicacy and transformation, Shona brings a nuanced and personal perspective to the work. Contributing to a space that celebrates and elevates women’s creative voices is a vital and affirming part of the project’s purpose.
A special thank you goes to Landmark Forest Adventure Park and their incredible team, who generously welcomed Shona into their Butterfly House during the creation of Wildlight: Emergence. Their knowledge, hospitality, and enthusiasm made it possible for her to photograph a variety of butterfly species in a dedicated environment, which became an essential part of bringing this project to life.
The support of Landmark not only provided access to these delicate creatures but also enriched the process with valuable insight into their behaviour and habitats. This collaboration reflects the importance of community, openness, and shared passion in the making of creative work.
